Without doing ANY calculations, determine whether each number sentence is true. EXPLAIN. Check your answer. You should have THREE explanations!
a) -50 (-800) = (-50 x -1000) + (-50 x 200)
b) -50 + (400 x 32) = (-50 + 400) x (-50 + 32)
c) 12 ÷ (-8 + 4) = (12 ÷ -8) + (12 ÷ 4)
A is true because -1000 plus 200 equals 800. Then from there it is the same thing as the original problem -500 times -800. B is false because it’s not even distributive property. The multiplication is inside the parenthesis when is should be outside. The addition is the one that is being distributed when the multiplication should. C is also false because there is a division sign in the problem. This would be order of operations not distributive property.

ReplyDeletea. The problem to letter a. is true because -1000+200=-800. This happens because 1000 is bigger than 200 so when the -1000 was being added to the positive 200 it became -800.

c. The problem to letter c. is false because you’re not allowed to use division instead of multiplication before the parenthesis.

ReplyDeleteA) This is true, because negative 1,000 plus 200 equals negative 800 so that becomes the same equation as the other problem.

B) This is not true because its negative 50 plus 400 and negative 50 plus 32. That will make whole different equation.
C) This is true because12 is dividing negative 8 and positive 4 and then adding the two. So it will equal the same as the original equation
My answer is A because if you add -1000 plus and positive 200 you would get -800 and from there you can multiply that by -50 and get your answer. B is wrong because inside the parenthesis you do not multiply you add inside the parenthesis. C does not work because in the first part you would do 23 divided by -4 and get your answer but doing it the expanded form you would get a different total.

1. Yes this is true because, -1000 plus 200 equals -800. And 800 is the number in the other equation so that is the answer.
ReplyDelete2. Yes this is true because you are multiplying in the parentheses on the first equation but on the others out side the equations, but you bring down the multiplication sine with the other equation.
3. Yes this is true because the longer equation is the same for the shorter equation. But equals the same thing.
Letter A. is the only correct answer because both the standard and expanded forms are equal to one another. As for letter A. the answer to the left side (standard form) equals 40,000 and on the right side (expanded form) has and equal answer of 40,000. Letter B.’s equation is not written correctly because the distributive property only work with multiplication outside of the parenthesis not with addition like in letter B.’s equation. As for letter C., it has made the same mistake as letter B. because the rule for the distributive property only allows multiplication outside of the parentheses not division.

The sentence is true because without working it out you can see that the first equation -50 times -800 you just look at 8 times the 5 and you get 40, then you add the 3 other zeros so you have 40,000. Then when you do -50 times -10,000 you multiply the 5 times the 1 and add the other 5 zeros so now you have 50,000. Then it says plus -50 times 200 and since it is a positive times a negative the answer will come out negative and 5 times 2 is 10 and then you add the other 3 zeros and you get 10,000. So if you subtract 10,000 from 50,000 you get 40,000 which is equivalent to the first equation.

C. This is wrong because division isn’t distributive.

A is true because it shows the distributive property and both sides of the number sentence (standard and expanded) are equal to each other. Also because -1000 + 200 = -800, and -800 is in the other equation.

2: is false because the first equation is saying to add outside the equation and the other is saying to multiply. So you get 2 different answers.

Letter A is true, because

Then once you do -50 times -10,000 you multiply that times the 1 and get 50,000. Then plus -50 times 200 and the answer would be a negative number, and you get 10,000. Then for the last step you subtract 10,000 from 50,000 and you get 40,000 which is the same answer. So that being said, the problem is true.

A)This is true; it is using the distributive property. Negative 1000 + 200 = -800, this makes the same question as the one before. The first equation equals 40000, and so does the second.

C)Yes, these equations equal each other, one is in standard form and one is in expanded form, but they are still the same problem.
I believe that a) is true because the first equation is in standard form and the second is in expanded form by using the distributive property. I believe that b) is false because the signs are not correct, the multipulcation and addition signs are not in the corrtect spots. I also believe that c) is false because division does not work with the distributive property.

A is correct because -1000 + 200 is like subtracting them. You distrubit the 50 then the negative 1000 + the postive 200 is equal to -800. For problem b the sign are not right were it says 50+(400+32) it should say 50x(400+32). C is wrong because were it has the dividion sign out side the parentes it should be muiltlycation.
